Every year in the United States, hundreds of children are injured or killed due to accidental shootings involving unsecured firearms. According to data from Everytown for Gun Safety, at least 350 children under the age of 18 unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else annually, often after finding a gun in a home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that firearm injuries are now the leading cause of death for children and teens in America, surpassing car accidents. These tragedies are preventable—safe storage practices such as locking guns unloaded and storing ammunition separately can reduce the risk of accidental shootings by up to 85% (Journal of Urban Health).
